Fundación Agaves Silvestres is a non-profit organization dedicated to the reforestation of wild agaves in Mexico. WIth the increased popularity of mezcales and other agave distillates worldwide, the demand for the wild agaves could vastly outpace their natural ability to reproduce.
Our first project aims to reforest Tobalá agaves (agave potatorum) and Madre Cuishe agaves (agave karwinskii) in the town of San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca. We also export mezcales from ultra small producers as our series of “Vino de Mezcal” to fund our projects. They are named “Vino de Mezcal” because they are produced outside of the denomination of origin states. Original funding for Fundación Agaves Silvestres was through a generous grant from Wahaka Mezcal.
